Daly City, San Mateo County
Daly City is named for John Daly, a dairy farmer whose land sheltered refugees from the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Many of them stayed, and the city incorporated in 1911. The rows of pastel houses built on its hills in the 1950s inspired the folk song Little Boxes. Daly City sits directly south of San Francisco, where the Peninsula begins.
